Dreams of dancers, musicians, circus artists, and athletes are not very different. They want to reach and perform on the biggest stage possible. Performing artists and athletes have at least two things in common. They have to perform well in high-pressure situations and face challenging physical demands. There is hardly any time for recovery. This can result in an overload in physical and mental capacities. It makes performing artists and athletes prone to health problems.PEARL focuses on the health and vitality of performing artists (dancers, musicians, and circus artists) and athletes. The aim of PEARL is to prevent physical and mental health problems, to optimize health and to maximize their performance.

PEARL consists of several field labs where research is conducted. Each field lab contains of state-of-the-art equipment to screen and monitor the health of performing artists and athletes. Data is collected under the supervision of embedded scientists. After that, data is translated into relevant information for performing artists, athletes, and their staff. An online web-based tool, the Performing artist and Athletes Health Monitor (PAHM), enables dance companies, orchestras, sports teams, universities and universities of applied sciences to collect and analyze data regarding the health problems of their artists and athletes. This data enables PEARL to detect an increased risk of physical injuries or mental problems at an early stage. Evidence-based advice can be given to prevent those injuries. With smart tools and an evidence-based approach PEARL helps to prevent and reduce physical & mental health problems and to optimizes the wellbeing and performances of elite artists and athletes.
