Workshop Day for Data in the Arts!

What’s happening?

On 13 April 2026, HKU, ArtEZ, AHK and Gerrit Rietveld Academie will organize a workshop day at the Culture Club at AHK, about data(management) in artistic research. The day is aimed at artistic researchers, data stewards and research support. We invite you join us on this day and participate in our three workshops surrounding data management plans, communities and consent, and physical data.

This day functions as a follow-up to our ‘Data in the Arts’ Symposium in November 2024, organized with the DCC-PO. On this day we engaged in a sector-wide conversation about what data and data-management actually means within artistic research.

From this day emerged a working group between the data stewards of HKU, ArtEZ, AHK and Gerrit Rietveld Academie. In this group we attempt to formulate answers to some of the questions that were posed during this symposium. What are the specific challenges we face in our research sector? How do you deal with privacy, Non-Textual Research Output, co-creation or anonymizing data? (See also the animation video!)

Our Workshop Day will be a hands-on day of doing, learning and making, where we want to create concrete answers, formats and forms to some of these challenges. See below for the program and the practical details.

Workshops

The three workshops will focus on the following:

  • Workshop 1: We will work on a data management plan (DMP) that is suitable and usable for art research, without losing sight of national standards.
  • Workshop 2: We will lay the groundwork for an informed consent form that reflects mutual collaboration between researcher and participant.
  • Workshop 3: Through co-creation, we will develop a poster that visualises: 1) what data in the arts looks like, 2) what data management challenges we encounter, and 3) which solutions may address these challenges.

Program

Every workshop takes 45 minutes and will be held in three rounds, so that every participant can join every workshop. There will also be a suggestion box present to share ideas, feedback, frustrations and eurekas.
